Luke 22:39-62

Key Verse: 22:42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”

1. Why did Jesus ask his disciples to pray at this moment (40,46)? What kind of temptations might the disciples face? (31-32)

2. What is Jesus’ prayer? (42) What does “this cup” symbolize? (cf. Mark 10:38) What does “not my will, but yours be done” show about how we should pray? (cf. Matthew 6:9-10)

3. How intense was Jesus’ struggle in prayer? (43-44; cf. Hebrews 5:7) Why were the disciples unable to pray in the same way? (45-46)

4. How did the disciples react in the time of crisis? (49-50) Why did Jesus willingly give himself up to the authorities? (51-53; Matthew 26:53-56)

5. Why did Peter deny Jesus in spite of his loyalty to Jesus (54-59; 33)? In the midst of trial, how did Jesus show his shepherd heart for Peter? (61-62; 34)
