Jesus, the Light for the Gentiles

Isaiah 49:1-7

Key Verse 49:6b “I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation my reach to the ends of the earth.”

1. When did the Lord call his servant? (1) How was this fulfilled in Jesus Christ? (cf. Luke 1:31)

2. How did the LORD equip his servant? (2) How is Jesus’ word like a sharpened sword? (cf. Hebrews 4:12; Luke 18:22) Why did the LORD call his servant? (3, 6)

3. How did the servant express his frustration with his mission? (4) How did Jesus struggle with his mission? (cf. Luke 18:8, Luke 22:44)

4. How did the servant find strength to fulfill his mission? (4b-5; cf. Philippians 4:13)

5. What does it mean, “I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth”? (6) How is this related to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19?

6. Read Acts 13:47-48. How did Paul and Barnabas apply verse 6 to their preaching to the Gentiles? What does this passage indicate about the Lord’s concern for people of all nations?
