We can look at people in the same way the religious leaders did. They believed themselves to be moral and righteous. They believed they were favoured by God because of how well they followed all the commandments and judged others by their own standards. In these verses, they would have seen themselves as the healthy. However, just as the healthy have no need for a doctor, a self-righteous person has no need for Jesus. This is sadly ironic because of this spiritual truth: the salvation and righteousness of God can only come to those who are unworthy of it.
