John 8:31-59
Key Verse 8:31,32 “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’”
1. Why did Jesus say to those who believed him to hold to his teaching? (31) How does holding to Jesus’ teaching enable us to become Jesus’ disciples?
2. What is the truth that Jesus speaks of and how does it set us free? (32; John 18:37)
3. Why were they offended? (33) In what sense are all people slaves? (34) How can we be set free and brought into God’s family? (36; John 1:12)
4. In what way did they show that they are neither true descendants of Abraham, nor true children of God? Why could the Jews not accept Jesus’ words? (37-47)
5. What did Jesus promise to those who obey his word? (51) What did Jesus teach about himself through the example of Abraham? (56-58)
