The Rejected Stone is the Cornerstone
Luke 20:1-19
Key Verse 20:17 “Jesus looked directly at them and asked, ‘Then what is the meaning of that which is written: The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?’”
1. What was the motive behind the religious leaders’ question? (1-2) Why wouldn’t they answer Jesus’ counter-question? (3-8)
2. In the parable, why did the tenants refuse to give the owner his share of the fruit? (9-12) Notice the increase in their hostility.
3. Instead of punishing the tenants, why did the owner send his son? (13) How did they treat his son and why? (14-15a)
4. What would the owner do about these rebellious tenants? (15b-16) How did Jesus relate his parable to Psalm 118:22? In what way is Jesus the stone the builders rejected who became the cornerstone? (Acts 4:11-12)
5. Why do some people behave like the tenants in the parable? (cf. Luke 7:29-30) What does it mean to us that Jesus is the Cornerstone? (cf. 1 Peter 2:6-8)
