The Cost of Being Jesus’ Disciple

Luke 14:25-35

Key Verse 14:27 “And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.”

1. Why did Jesus make such a provocative statement in verse 26? What does he mean by “hate”? (cf. Matthew 10:37-38; John 12:25) How is verse 26 similar to God’s words in Exodus 20:3,5 and Matthew 6:24?

2. What does Jesus mean by “carry their cross and follow me”? (27) What does it mean to us today?

3. What do the two stories—“estimating the cost of building a tower and a king’s plan for the war” have in common? (28-32) What kind of decision must one make if they want to be Jesus’ disciple? (33)

4. How does one lose saltiness? (34-35; cf. Matthew 5:13) Should every Christian be a disciple of Jesus? Why is it necessary?
