John 5:1-15
Key Verse 5:8 “Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk!’”
1. What kind of crowd was waiting by the pool and why? (2-4) In what way does this scene resemble the world in which we live?
2. What must life have been like for the man who was invalid for 38 years? What did Jesus ask him and why? (5-6)
3. Why didn’t the invalid answer Jesus’ question? What reasons did the invalid give for his failure to be healed and what might it show about his attitude toward life? (7)
4. Why do you think Jesus healed him with the command, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk!”? (8)
5. Why did the Jewish leaders and the formerly invalid man miss the significance of his healing? (9b-15) When Jesus met him at the temple, what warning did he give to the man and why?
6. Why do you think Jesus healed only one person out of so many disabled people at the pool? In what way do we resemble the invalid man and how can we be healed?
