Most people when they read this passage identify it as the story of the immoral woman. But it is in fact the story of Jesus evangelizing a Pharisee, who is the worst of sinners. The worst possible sinner, the most unredeemable of all, is the one who thinks he is not a sinner and doesn’t need redemption, who thinks that God is pleased with him the way he is. This is the worst of sinners. Jesus came to seek and to save the lost. The religious leaders accused him of being only interested in drunkards and tax collectors and being the friend of sinners. But he was the friend of religious sinners like the Pharisee also.
