Behold My Servant

Isaiah 42:1-17

Key Verse 42:1 “Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations.” (ESV)

1. What does it mean that God “upholds” and “delights” in his servant, and that he put his Spirit upon him? (1; 11:2; cf. Matthew 3:16–17)

2. What is the justice that God brings? (cf. 1:17, 11:3-5) Why is eliminating idolatry a part of it? (8; cf. 41:21–24,29) Why is bringing his justice to the nations so important to God? (cf. 5:16)

3. What vivid imagery is used to describe the servant? (3; cf. Matthew 12:15)

4. What does it mean that God will make him “to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles”? (6b-7; 49:6; cf. Matthew 26:28) Who is the Lord who carries on this work (5,8)?

5. What should be our response to the Lord who does new things? (9-13) What new work will the Lord do after holding back a long time? (14-17)

6. What can we learn when we “behold” God’s Servant, Jesus? How can we become servants who are more like him?
