When our eyes are working properly, they take in the light and reflect accurate images of reality. We can see things as they are. But if our eyes are bad, they distort reality. In severe cases, we can be blind and unable to see at all. The same is true of our spiritual eyes. If the eyes of our hearts are enlightened, we can see the hope to which he has called us, the riches of his glorious inheritance in us and his incomparably great power for us (Ephesians 1:18). But if our eyes are not working well, and ruled by human philosophy or sinful desire, everything looks dark and gloomy. We become negative and useless. The Pharisees and religious leaders were in such a condition. So Jesus warns in verse 35, “See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.”
