Are Your Eyes Healthy?
Luke 11:29-54
Key Verse 11:34 “Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.”
1. Why did Jesus rebuke the “wicked generation”? (29, 16; cf. 9:41) What does Jesus mean that he is the sign to his times as Jonah was a sign to the people of Nineveh? (30; cf. Matthew 12:40)
2. Why would the Queen of the South and the people of Nineveh condemn the people of Jesus’ day? (31-32; 2 Chronicles 9:1) What is wrong with a sign-seeking mentality?
3. In what sense is the eye the lamp of our body? (33-36) Why can’t some people see the light? (cf. John 1:5) [According to the footnote, in Greek healthy implies generous and unhealthy implies stingy.]
4. How did Jesus shock the Pharisee who invited him to dinner? (38) How did Jesus expose their hypocrisy? (39-42; cf. Hosea 6:6)
5. In verses 43-54, why did Jesus rebuke the Pharisees? In what sense are they spiritually blind? (cf. John 5:44) How can we have “healthy eyes”?
